Llandaff North V’s Glamorgan Wanders A Game
of Three Halves
A New Year produced good start for
both teams at Hailey Park today. Both under 11 teams showed true grit
and determination, after shaking off the soggy past few weeks. The Wanders
opened the game with impressive forward work and sharp control from the
scrum half, but The North were not to be deterred and pushed the Wanders
back. The first score came after a break from the blues forwards to put
them on the score board after 10 minutes with the conversion making it
0-7. Then it was the North’s turn with Blistering attacking runs
from Brandon Evans, Dai Evans, Tom Mclean and Daniel (Skippy) Hughes.
Good support from the forward saw the ball being recycled well, DT (Capt),
Crompie and BT worked hard at the back of the scrum controlling the release.
One of the many high lights of the
game was that of the Scrum halves. Megan of the Wanders and Lukie of the
North both played like the demons niggling at each other at the back of
the scrums and both keeping the pressure on at the release. The North
came back with a try from DT to make it 7-7 and a quick turn around from
the Wanders to take the lead and open the score line to 7-12 by the end
of the first half.
With fresh vigour the Wanders came
straight out of the blocks to pile the pressure on the North, pushing
them all the way back to their own Try line. The defensive line from the
north held even seeing the wanders crossing but only just being denied
the try by the North’s gritty smaller forwards. The Wanders kept
the pressure on, but the North cleared their lines with a solid performance
from the North Full Back Harrison Prance. The tussle through the second
half was to hold the score line at 7-12 at the sound of the Whistle.
With a lack of Game play over the
last few weeks both teams agreed to a third half and we were truly entertained.
By this time most of the park was beginning to empty, but the elevens
played on in the winter sunshine. The Wanders opened up the score to 7-19
with a tightrope run down the touchline. At the restart a fumbled ball
gave the North the put in. Lukie fed the awaiting back line as the Wanders
defensive line moved up Dai received from Brandon and with a flick of
feet and offer of dummy he stepped inside the defender with a long pass
through to Skippy, ground was being made. With a stretched Wanders defence
they managed to catch young Skippy and then held out for the scrum. This
time the forwards answered with BT going over to close the score at 12-19.
With five minutes to go the points came from good hands and good awareness
and this saw the North push the Wanders back to their twenty two. With
DT collecting the loose ball he connected with Dai and Lukie to offload
to Harrison who came through from the back field to score the final try
of the day in the bottom corner to tie the score at 19 all.
At the final whistle both teams had
given 110% and entertained us all with an enthralling encounter. It was
a pleasure to watch, giving their all and receive nothing but Pride. Oh
and Sausage and Chips!gion1
